Slippery Slope Fallacy: The Domino Theory of the Cold War

Slippery Slope: Back in the 1950's and 60's in the U.S government, the Eisenhower Administration made a theory that if one country in a region becomes communist and or is influenced by the Soviet Union then all the countries within the region around it become communists and or fall in the hands of the Soviet Union. Like during the 1950's and 60's when Vietnam is becoming a communist country, it was assume that all of the other countries in Southeast Asia would become communist when in actuality only countries like Cambodia and Laos became truly communist. There was a reason why the United States used military operations to counter it like the Vietnam War.

Here's an prime example quote from then President Dwight D. Eisenhower about the Domino Theory, Finally, you have broader considerations that might follow what you would call the "falling domino" principle. You have a row of dominoes set up, you knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly. So you could have a beginning of a disintegration that would have the most profound influences.

During Eisenhower's years as president, there were quite some countries that are communists. Russia, many eastern European countries and northern central Asian countries who are all part of the Soviet Union are communists. Other countries like China and North Korea were already communists since the late 1940's and early 1950's. At the time being since they are all communists nations based on their region, it was assume that if one country within a region becomes communist then all the other countries around in the region will soon become communist. During that time Vietnam in the 1950's had growing sectors or groups of communist revolutionaries. This could perhaps spread throughout Vietnam and then into other surrounding countries.

  1. The government certainly promotes economic and political theories like the one you mention here. I wonder if you could find a quote from the Eisenhower administration making the Slippery Slope claim? Which countries actually then became communist? Was it an argument without merit? That's what you can explore with this fallacy.
